The curved surfaces (wedges) of this external key freewheel are located on the outer freewheel which is connected to the armature shaft via the carrier. This arrangement has the advantage that the pinion mass and the overhauling torque when overhauling the engine are both small. This has a positive effect on the durability of these parts and the starter bearings.
