Accident prevention with front-end camera systems

Road accidents involving agricultural machinery are not uncommon. With the support of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, the German Agricultural Society (DLG) is committed to reducing accidents.
The focus of accident prevention is monitoring cross traffic, which requires an insight into the blind spots at the front of large vehicles. Many blind spots occur due to the significant distance between the driver and the front of the vehicle, or due to the numerous attachments fitted. Leaving a blind junction with such a large vehicle is incredibly dangerous and the cause of numerous accidents.
Due to the equipment obstructing the view on both sides, the driver has to drive 3.5 metres into the road before they can see other vehicles.

Nationwide regulation
After an intensive research phase, the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has stipulated in the published guidelines that vehicles must be equipped with a camera monitor system when an attachment is used.
A camera system is also mandatory if the distance from the centre of the steering wheel to the front of the vehicle is 3.5 metres or more.
This regulation was introduced because most accidents are caused by drivers not being able to see the front of their vehicle when manoeuvring, using a front-mounted implement or leaving a blind junction.

A technical aid is required when carrying a front-mounted implement, or when the distance from the centre of the steering wheel to the front edge of the implement or to the front end of the vehicle is more than 3.5 metres.
